Spencer's Semana 7

 Monday, June 10, 2013

Well, I am in Texas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is so nice to be out of the MTC! I left Monday morning and had to wake up at 4 in the morning which pretty much blew! The airport was super weird! Being in the real world was shocking kinda! The Salt Lake airport wasn't too weird but when we landed in Dallas, that's when it got kinda weird! haha. People were just staring at us! I don't know why! Well I do but it's like they had never seen a missionary before! Me and Elder Cowan destroyed some taco bell and mountain dew during our layover.

There was a big group of us all coming to McAllen. We landed in McAllen only to be greeted by the mission president, President Trayner, his wife, and the two assistants to the mission pres. We were then loaded onto a van and shipped to the mission office where we were told all the rules regarding bikes and cars and stuff. Then we went to the Trayners house where we had a huge bbq dinner! It was soooooo freakinggggggg goooodddddddd!!!!!! Best bbq I have ever had hands down! Then to top it off some Texas sheet cake to fill in all the cracks! We had interviews that night and did some role plays for practice for the field. Me and Elder Cowan stayed with same elders in their apartment that night. We woke up the next day, got our faces stuffed with some breakfast at the Trayners and then we all got our assignments!

I am now in Laredo Texas with my trainer Elder Munoz. He is a suppppper short native from Columbia and the first time I heard his voice my brain stopped working because his voice is so high pitched that I couldn't believe it! He is really cool and he speaks English about as well as I speak Spanish! Some how we are able to communicate. He took me grocery shopping first thing and I had no idea what to get! He told me what he usually gets and so I kinda just copied him. I am never doing that again! He eats pretty much nothing. I have been living off of cup of noodles, pistachios and cereal for the past week. Pero, esta bien!

When I got here he already had an investigator named Valerie! She is a mom with 3 kids and one of her kids was just baptized 2 weeks ago. She can't get baptized yet because she lives with her boyfriend and needs to get a divorce from her husband in Mexico. So we are waiting for her to get divorced and married and then we can baptize her! The whole week pretty much sucked! I imagined we would be a lot more successful! We drive around all day and knock on doors but probably 2% of the people answer the door and talk to us. When they do talk to us..... IT MAKES THE OTHER 98% WORTH IT!!!! We found a family yesterday named the Villarreals! They are all the epitome of cholos! All the girls no older than 21 and have like a million kids! We taught them the gospel of Jesus Christ and set baptism dates with two of them and we are going back Wednesday to eat tacos and teach the rest of them!

Today was p day and as soon as study time was over we drove to these places called bodegas! They are warehouses with clothes just strewn all over the place. The elders here are obsessed with ties! The brand means everything! So my couple of Ted Baker ties make all the elders jaws drop, haha. We went "tie digging" at the bodegas and apparently Laredo is notorious for tie digging because you can find super nice ties here! I ended up with some ties that I actually really like! Now I just need to get the wrinkles out!

I hope this week we are more successful! It's hard to do what we do without success. I know with faith and hard work and diligent prayer we will be successful! I miss and love you all so much! Thanks for the prayers!

Con mucho amor,
Elder McKee
